Creating Shelves From Some Old Friends

imageOne thing you may not know about me is how much I love antiques, repurposing items and shopping for bargains. Anytime I visit a flea market or antique store I am always on the look out for something that can be reworked or refurbished into something different.

I have this long blank wall in our powder room, it’s right across from my office so I look at it everyday. When I ran across these boxes at The Depot at Gibson Mills a few months ago I knew they would be perfect. Anyone remember the old Dewey Decimal System? Yes these are file drawers from a library, the place we use to go for research and information or to pick up a good book to read. These blasts from the past make great shelves!

My handy husband attached them to the wall for me and it was time to get busy decorating. As always I started with the items I had hanging around the house. Having a great collection of old family books makes it easy so I located the ones that were just the right size. Theimage books and a cute bird statue determined the color scheme I wanted to create which was turquoise blue, bronze and white. I found some other items I’ve had for years and a few newer ones to start determing the layout. Once I realized where the pieces I had were going it was time to hit the clearance rack at Pier 1 Imports and Kirklands to fill in the gaps and balance the layout. I lucked up and found exactly what I needed to complete the look. The entire ensemble, shelves and all, came in around $45. I think I like how it turned out. What do you think?
